Sighting straight down the receiver and barrel with both eyes open is a natural act that enhances depth perception, field of view, and light collection. The dominant eye is drawn to focus through the open port and frame the target so you know that what you see is what you hit. Optional angled barrel porting reduces flash while minimizing barrel rise. Never fire an internally threaded shotgun barrel without a choke installed.

This is especially important if the barrel lug is located within two inches of the muzzle see photo abovebecause reaming and threading the muzzle weakens the area over the lug. Installing a choke or muzzle brake will reinforce this barrel wall without any negative effect.

However, installing a shotgun suppressor adds a great deal more weight and stress to the barrel. To ensure this is not a problem, Silencerco has tested their SALVO suppressor without any issues on barrels that have been reamed and threaded over the barrel lug. As an added safety measure, if you intend to use 870 stock options suppressor, we suggest the barrel extend two inches beyond the barrel lug. On most Remington shotguns this allows the use of an extended magazine cap, thus increasing your magazine capacity by one round.

Many SxS shotguns with factory installed removable chokes have barrel walls that are thinner in the middle, then thicken near the muzzle. This is done to balance the gun and keep the weight down, while retaining enough metal to install removable chokes. As a result, once the barrels are shortened to the desired length, there may not be enough remaining wall thickness to install chokes.
