There seems to be more room and opportunity to make some money in animated stock footage but I find the idea of making templates more enjoyable. I really like building my Ae projects to be flexible and easily editable. I realize I can do everything outside of these site but I would like to avoid building an audience and all that.

It's not a ticket to Elysium or anything in terms of money unless you're devoting all of your time to becoming a template factory. You'll probably get some nice bonus money though. I only say that because you mention wanting to only make things that you enjoy, and a lot of times what someone enjoys isn't the same as what the market is looking for.

Templates are a corporate biz, so you have to play to them if you want to make a real go at it. I'm sure you know all of that already I just thought it was worth mentioning. Really the only thing you'd be risking, initially, is your time.

There's no real reason not to do it if you have the time. I see it the other way around though. I have to make content that is appealing to that market, but I have more freedom than working directly for some clients.
